It is a wise precaution each spring to take a sample of bees (approx. 30) from each hive and ask your local Beekeepers’ Association or Bee inspector for assistance to check these for disease. Also collect your floor debris to check for Varroa.

Nosema is caused by protozoa which multiplies in the digestive tract. The disease is seasonal with spring being the time of year when it is usually at its peak. Once bees become infected they are weakened and this may lead to spring dwindling.

Fumidil B mixed with the syrup for autumn and early spring feeding is the recommended treatment for Nosema.

Wax Moth Drawn honey comb, which is to be stored, must be protected against wax moth or valuable combs will be destroyed by this pest. The combs to be stored can be treated with CERTAN. Certan contains Bacillus thuringiensis, which is eaten by wax moth larvae and causes their death. Certan is not toxic to bees or people and 4 oz. will treat approximately 120 combs.

Acarine This disease is caused by a mite (Acarapis woodi) which attacks the nervous systems of bees via their trachea culminating in the inability to fly and their ultimate death. Symptoms: crawling bees with extended wings.
